The Publication Division
The Publication Division of the National Library, in ADACH, was established at the beginning of 1992 and is responsible for publishing Arabic and Islamic heritage books, works in the applied sciences, as well as translations from foreign languages.
During the last few years the Publication Division adopted a series of initiatives that aim to enhance the publishing industry and knowledge transfer in UAE and throughout the Arabian Gulf and the Arab World.
These initiatives include:
Qalam Project:
Qalam-Writings from UAE- was created by ADACH in 2007 to nurture, encourage and promote creativity and talent for all Emiratis through the medium of writing. With a vision that will enhance Abu Dhabi’s role as a pioneer cultural hub in the GCC and the Arab world, Qalam has set out to develop young local writers by promoting, distributing and publishing their literary works. All kinds of writing from short-stories, novels, plays and poetry will be showcased.
Qalam draws inspiration from the past and the present to illuminate the future. The development of a strong literary culture in which ideas and experiences can be explored and shared becomes the basis for greater mutual understanding and appreciation for future generations of writers and readers.
Qalam’s vision is to inspire young writers and showcase their work to a wider Arab audience throughout the Gulf.
The project was launched with the publication of about six works, and the number this year has already reached 16 titles.
Future plans include the translation of these works into other world languages, and attracting more new talent to join Qalam.
Poetry Encyclopedia
Years of working on the Poetry Encyclopedia, and launching many updated electronic versions of it throughout the years, the National Library soon plans to the Poetry Encyclopedia website, which will give readers, students, scholars, and poetry and books lovers in general, access to hundreds of classic Arabic books, let alone the whole body of Arabic poetry, from pre-Islamic era, until the twentieth century. This website was designed to be user friendly, with many interactive services that ensure optimal benefit from its materials.
Audio books
The National Library resumed this year the Audiobooks Project. As one of its most successful ventures during the last decade - in which dozens of books in Arabic and foreign languages (translated into Arabic) were produced -this project will go further this year with a new series of audio books that cover a wide range of cultural interests, and through which Publication Division continues its efforts to enhance public interest in reading.
Explorers of the Arabian Levant Series
Many orientalists throughout history, have visited the Arabian Gulf region, and other Arabic regions, and recorded their accounts of these travels. The National Library has undertaken this project to translate some of the most important travel books, which were subject to a new revision in order to present it to the modern Arabic reader.
Manuscript editing
The National Library continues one of its most important tasks, which is revising and re publishing Arabic classics, relying on its collection of original manuscripts, as well on its cooperation with other institutions and academic mediums that share its interest in making these books available to modern scholars and readers. During this year, many of these previously unedited manuscripts will be published for the first time
