ADACH has adopted the following strategy for dealing with excavation, management, mapping, preservation and surveying of archaeological and palaeontological sites within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi:

  • by establishing a Cultural Heritage Database which provides an inventory of all the assets within the Emirate,
  • by integration of this database within a Cultural Heritage GIS system,
  • by establishing a Preliminary Cultural Review (PCR) system,
  • by undertaking further Excavations and Surveys to document the Emirate, and
  • by participating in regional, national and international forums relating to the cultural heritage of Abu Dhabi Emirate

The Historic Environment Department follows this strategy through its three divisions: the Archaeology division, the Historic Buildings division and the Cultural Landscapes division.

The Archaeology Division

The Archaeology Division within the Department of Historic Environment at The Authority is involved in the excavation, management, mapping, preservation and surveying of archaeological and palaeontological sites within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
It strives to follow the guidelines established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Centre to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity.

Cultural Landscapes

The Cultural Landscapes Division within the Department of Historic Environment at ADACH is involved in the mapping, preservation and management of cultural landscapes within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
In 1992 the UNESCO World Heritage Convention became the first international legal instrument to recognise and protect cultural landscapes. The Committee at its 16th session adopted guidelines concerning their inclusion in the World Heritage List. The Committee acknowledged that cultural landscapes represent the "combined works of nature and of man" designated in Article 1 of the Convention. They are illustrative of the evolution of human society and settlement over time, under the influence of the physical constraints and/or opportunities presented by their natural environment and of successive social, economic and cultural forces, both external and internal.
