She has been described as a cultural phenomenon. At the age of 13 Lin Cheng released her debut album and became the most successful vocalist of her generation, achieving superstar status in China and selling over 25 million albums in Asia alone. Not only a singer, Cheng is a classically trained virtuoso of the erhu (a Chinese violin, pronounced air-hoo) as well. Taught by her father from the age of 6, Lin left China and went to the US in an effort to fulfill her promises to him. He asked her to never stop playing the erhu, and to introduce the instrument to the world--especially the west. At the same time she learned English, studied western classical musical traditions and produced a unique East meets West musical style. Her art combines the haunting and soulful sounds of the erhu with western world grooves, creating an original and soul-stirring blend. Cheng is currently in the studio with KC Porter, preparing her forthcoming CD release.
