Poetry Academy announces completion of selection process of all poems submitted to take part in its 4th session of "Prince of Poets"

The Poetry Academy in Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage announced last October the completion of the review and selection process of all the poems submitted for the participation at the fourth session of the Prince of Poets, the great classical Arabic competition. The number of participants reached more than 7000 poets from 30 countries. The ones who met the Competition conditions were accepted.

Sultan Al Amimi, Director of the Poetry Academy and member of the competition's organising committee, said: “We received entries from both inside and outside the Arab World. There were requests to submit poetry made from Europe, Asia and Africa as well as from Arabs holding non-Arab nationalities, and non-Arabs who had mastered the Arabic language. Among the participants were poets from the United States, Canada, Australia, Denmark, the Seychelles, Belgium, Chad, Mali, Burkina Faso, India and Nigeria.”

Last June the Poetry Academy announced the opening of the registration process for the fourth session of “Prince of Poets” competition which deals with classic Arabic poetry.

The “Prince of Poets” is a well-renowned cultural competition launched in Abu Dhabi in April 2007, where poets compete in all forms of classical poetry and can enter poems in a variety of styles, whether that be a metric (traditional) poem, or a free verse one.

The competition is aimed at promoting and enhancing classical Arabic poetry. It wishes to revive the positive role of Arabic poetry within Arabic culture and increase its world-wide human interest, emphasizing its inherent message of peace and love to the whole world.

It highlights the role of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in the promotion of interaction and communication between classical Arab poets. A large database has recently been established which contains information on classical poetry, poets, critics and those working in the field within the Arab world.
