08 August, 2010

Abu Dhabi's project translates novel taught to children in Switzerland. Kalima translates Eugène's "Les Mises en boites" ABU DHABI – Kalima, the translation project of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) published the Arabic version of Eugène's novel “Les Mises en boites”. The short novel tells the accounts of a tranquil city whose people work day and night in a boxes factory set up by a wealthy industrialist Rudy, who controls all parts of life. A child named Sashinka begins to ask questions that are simple for the first instance and only require simple straightforward answers. But everyone, from family to school to workers to the people of the city, becomes stunned by these questions, which are eye-openers that change long-held perceptions and pushes aside frozen thought. A series of unexpected events, resulting from those questions, lead everyone to reconsider their pre-packaged lives. Childhood innocence, curiosity for knowledge, the ills of a consumer society, and the spirit of solidarity, were some of the issues raised by this novel in an interesting language that is graceful, fun and has depth and intelligence. This is the first novel that the author wrote for youth and it achieved a great success. It was included in the education curriculums for children in Switzerland. The author is of a Swiss of Romanian origin, who had lived in Lausanne since 1975. He began his life as the head of a rock music band. But after receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree, he devoted himself to writing. He started writing plays before moving to novels and youth literature. In addition to his creative writing, he also writes articles in several Swiss newspapers. Since 2001, he served as the head of the Swiss Authors Society. The book's translator into Arabic is Walid Al Sewirki, a poet and translator from Jordan, born in 1967 in Palestine. He published his first poetry collection "White Wings of Despair" in 2006. He also translated a number of books and articles into Arabic.
