Archaeological activities of
the Directorate General of
Antiquities, (Ministry of
Culture), Lebanon, 2005-2011
This talk is a presentation of
selective projects done by the
Directorate General of Antiquities
(DGA) over a six year period,
2005-2011.
The results of the urban and rescue excavations undertaken since 2005, in Beirut, will be exposed. These excavations reveal on the one hand the extent of the Roman necropolis of Beirut and on the other hand for the first time in the southern side of the city the discovery of Roman installations and a prehistoric site going back to the Middle Palaeolithic. A new roman bath and an industrial area was also discovered and will be presented. This talk tackles the developer funded archaeology explaining its advantages and limitations. Excavation dynamics are more or less driven by construction and
developments, the policy of the DGA is to adapt its scientific and research strategies in order to fit within an imposed urban development framework.
Heritage management and the preservation of archaeological sites, the 3D Laser Scanning project done in Baalbek with the assistance of the UNESCO office Beirut will be presented and the results explained.
